Il crate digging (letteralmente “scavare tra le casse”), quell'irrefrenabile desiderio di cercare e spulciare tra dischi in vinile nei negozi di musica, mercatini dell'usato, fiere o scantinati, a caccia di gemme nascoste, rarità o sample sonori sconosciuti è lo “sport” preferito di tanti appassionati.

La copertina di Endtroducing..... di  DJ Shadow immortala proprio la quintessenza di questa forma di “archeologia urbana”, di questa incontrollabile voglia di scovare nei solchi della musica. L'immagine, realizzata nello storico negozio di dischi Rare Records, a Sacramento, in California, luogo che è stata la musa ideale del nostro per la realizzazione del disco, come lui stesso ha dichiarato anche nel documentario del 2001 Scratch, è stata catturata dal celebre fotografo irlandese  Brian Cross, noto nel mondo della musica con lo pseudonimo di B+, modificando rapidamente la messa a fuoco per dare quel senso di spontaneità e movimento all'interno del locale. Quella  di Endtroducing..... è divenuta una delle immagini più iconiche del collezionismo musicale, Dj Shadow stesso possiede oltre 60.000 vinili, e descrive visivamente quello che il disco contiene a livello sonoro: una ricerca infinita del suono tra scaffali polverosi.

Endtroducing..... , che il 16 settembre ha compiuto 30 anni, è anche una pietra miliare della cultura hip hop e della sampledelia, inserito nel Guinness dei Primati come il primo disco interamente composto da campionamenti. È l'essenza stessa dell'arte del sampling. DJ Shadow, con un campionatore Akai MPC60 a 12 bit, un giradischi Technics SL-1200, un registratore Alesis ADAT e un Pro Tools prestatogli dal produttore e amico Dan the Automator, che figura come assistente ingegnere del suono nei crediti dell'album, ha assemblato centinaia di frammenti sonori provenienti da vinili di ogni genere, colonne sonore comprese, iniziando a lavorare al suo monumentale album di debutto nel 1994 nel suo appartamento a Davis, per poi trasferirsi proprio alla Glue Factory di Dan the Automator per completare le sessioni di registrazione.

Proviamo adesso a “mettere a fuoco”, quelle due figure della copertina - il produttore  Chief Xcel  e  il rapper  Lyrics Born -  e poi proviamo a scovare alcuni dei campionamenti, perché tutti sarebbe impossibile, presenti nello sterminato magma sonoro di Endtroducing..... :
